samurai champloo : characters

January 21, 2009

kiboko Hachiyon

The character design for Samurai Champloo captured my imagination from the onset. The mixture of dark outline and exaggerated features was something that I was already putting into practice in my own work and I found it very appealing, raw and powerful.

I also began to study and understand how a character can be typecast by the way they look, dress, what they carry e.t.c and how this lends or adds to a story. Another observation is when creating characters, they should be assigned with qualities that people can associate with e.g. Mugen from Samurai Champloo is typecast as a “badass” with a don’t care attitude and by just looking at him you can just about figure out who he is and what he is about

Above is my personal take on the Samurai Champloo main characters, and the image above it shows the original. Wikipedia the anime for more information.
