I spent some time in Nairobi recently and was commissioned to create a set of paintings for a restaurant, R&J Bistro, located in Phoenix House, Kenyatta Avenue/ Standard Street.
The brief was loose and much of the work was based on my experiences of Nairobi while I was there, from everyday occurences to encounters with people, animals and insects. The body of work is named after 10 people I spent the most time with while I was there. If you are ever in that area of town, pay the restaurant a visit, the food is good and enjoy the work.
Ambra – Roger – Josi depicts an everyday scene. From the mkokoteni [hand – driven cart] driver with his buckets of water [water shortage being a problem facing different parts of the the city], to the running after a matatu, to the hang out drink time that has been experienced by people of all ages. Nairobi is an animated city filled with hints of melancholy
Hey. good stuff!! i will pass by and eat…can i eat sare and say i know the guy who did this paintings?
